Privacy policy
This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and what we do with it. We have tried to write it in plain language rather than legal boilerplate.

Who we are
This website is operated by Mapuche BJJ Academy Pty Ltd (ABN 56 685 652 911), trading as Mapuche BJJ Academy, of 8/9 Hare Place, Rouse Hill NSW 2155.
If you have a question about this policy or about information we hold about you, contact us at rene@mapuchebjj.com.au or 0401 173 199.
What we collect
When you contact us through this website, we may collect:
- Your name
- Your email address
- Your phone number
- The class you are interested in
- Anything you choose to write in the notes field
- Which page of the site you submitted the form from
The notes field is optional and free text. We ask about age, injuries and previous experience because it helps us put you in a suitable class. If you tell us about an injury or a medical condition, that is health information, which is treated as sensitive information under Australian privacy law. We only collect it because you have chosen to give it to us, we use it only to run classes safely, and you are welcome to leave it out and raise it with a coach in person instead.
If you become a member, we collect further information in person or on paper, such as emergency contact details and any medical information relevant to training safely. That is held by the academy directly and is not part of this website.
Cookies and analytics
We may use cookies and similar technologies to keep this site working properly, to understand which pages people find useful, and to help us advertise the academy. Where we do, some of these may be provided by third parties who process that information on our behalf.
Parts of this site may load content from other providers, such as maps or embedded media. Where that happens, those providers may receive your IP address and similar technical information as part of serving that content to you.
Most browsers let you block or delete cookies in their settings. Doing so will not stop you using this site.
How we use your information
We may use what you give us to:
- Reply to your enquiry and arrange a trial class
- Work out which class suits you or your child
- Keep you safe on the mat, where you have told us something relevant
- Keep our own records of enquiries and members
We do not sell your information. We do not share it for anyone else's marketing. We will not add you to a mailing list off the back of an enquiry.
Who else handles it
Running a website and answering email means some information is handled by service providers on our behalf. These may include the people who build and manage our website, our hosting and infrastructure providers, and the email services we use to receive and read enquiries.
They only handle what is needed to do their job, and they are not permitted to use your information for their own purposes. Some of our providers are global companies whose systems may involve facilities outside Australia. Where information is handled overseas, we take reasonable steps to use providers that handle it appropriately.
Children
We teach children from four years old, so we hold information about children. We expect enquiries about a child to come from that child's parent or guardian, and we deal with the parent or guardian rather than the child. If you believe a child has given us information without a parent's knowledge, contact us and we will delete it.
Photographs and video
We sometimes take photographs and video in class, and use them on this website and on our social media. We ask before photographing anyone, and we will not knowingly publish an image of a child without a parent's or guardian's agreement.
If an image of you or your child appears somewhere you are not comfortable with, tell us and we will take it down. You do not need to give a reason.
How long we keep it
Enquiries are kept while we are in contact with you and for a reasonable period afterwards, in case you come back to us. Member records are kept while you train with us and for as long as we are required to keep them afterwards. When we no longer need information, we delete it or de-identify it.
Keeping it secure
Information sent through this site travels over an encrypted connection. We take reasonable steps to protect what we hold from misuse, loss and unauthorised access. No system is perfect, and we will not claim otherwise, but we will tell you if something happens that we are required to tell you about.
Seeing and correcting what we hold
You can ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it if it is wrong, or ask us to delete it. Email rene@mapuchebjj.com.au and we will respond within a reasonable time. We may need to confirm who you are first.
Complaints
If you think we have mishandled your information, please raise it with us first at rene@mapuchebjj.com.au. We would rather hear about it and fix it.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle information, we will update this page and the date at the top of it. If a change is significant, we will make a point of telling members rather than relying on you to re-read this page.
